If you are planning a hiking trip in Norway, one of the first questions you might ask is: Are DNT cabins free? The short answer is no, most DNT cabins are not free to stay in.
DNT cabins are part of a nationwide trekking network, and overnight stays usually cost money, although members get discounts. DNT operates more than 600 cabins across Norway, generally divided into staffed lodges, self-service cabins, and no-service cabins.
Simple does not mean free
Many no-service cabins are basic and some may be unlocked, but that does not mean they are free to use. Guests are expected to register their stay and pay. If you use facilities at self-service or no-service cabins, you may need to pay even for a day visit, and if you stay inside after 18:00, you need to pay for overnight accommodation.
Typical prices
For adults, a bed in a self-service or no-service cabin typically starts around NOK 250 to 350 per night, while some beginner guidance lists beds from around NOK 340 for adults. Prices vary by cabin and local association, so check the specific listing before you go.
Family advantage
Children who are DNT members stay free at the vast majority of self-service and no-service cabins, which can make cabin trips much more affordable for parents hiking with kids.
The DNT key
To use many cabins, members can borrow the DNT cabin key against a NOK 100 deposit. The key opens most self-service and no-service cabins in the network. DNT cabins are usually not free, but they are often one of the most affordable and uniquely Norwegian ways to hike.
