The DNT Key Explained: How to Unlock Norway’s Cabin Network

One of the cleverest parts of Norway’s hiking culture is the DNT key: a standard key system that opens most self-service and no-service cabins.

Members can borrow the DNT key against a NOK 100 deposit, which is refunded when the key is returned. You can usually collect and return it through staffed lodges, DNT association offices, and selected representatives.

Why it matters

Many of Norway’s best hiking experiences happen far from hotels and busy roads. The DNT key makes the cabin network feel connected and gives hikers practical access to cabins scattered across the country.

What it does not mean

Having the key does not mean the stay is free. You still need to register and pay for accommodation and anything you use from the pantry in self-service cabins.
