Your first DNT cabin trip does not need to be complicated, but it does need a bit of planning.
Costs
Simple self-service and no-service cabins are usually the cheapest options. Adult beds commonly start around NOK 250 to 350, with some beginner guidance listing beds from NOK 340. Prices vary by cabin.
Families
Children who are DNT members stay free at the vast majority of no-service and self-service cabins, which can make a cabin trip much cheaper than many people expect.
Packing
Self-service cabins usually have bunks, duvets or blankets, kitchen gear, firewood, and fuel, but sleeping bag liners are required. For no-service cabins, bring all your food.
Booking and timing
Search by cabin name or area, check dates and guests, and verify opening periods. Many self-service and no-service cabins are open year-round, but some mountain areas close from mid October until late winter.
Simple first-trip strategy
Choose an easier route, use a self-service or no-service cabin, verify opening dates, pack a liner, and understand the payment system before you go.
