Self-service and no-service DNT cabins may sound similar, but the experience can be quite different.
Self-service cabins
A self-service cabin is usually equipped with firewood, gas, kitchen utensils, bunks with blankets or duvets and pillows, and a pantry with provisions such as canned food, coffee, tea, crispbread, and soup mixes. The selection varies by cabin.
No-service cabins
A no-service cabin is simpler. These cabins usually have beds, duvets or blankets, cooking facilities, and firewood, but no food storage. You must bring all your own food.
What you do yourself
In both cabin types, expect to fetch water, cook, clean, and leave the place in good order for the next hiker.
Which should you choose?
Beginners often find self-service cabins easier because the pantry gives more backup. No-service cabins are better for hikers who want a simpler, quieter, more independent trip and are comfortable planning meals carefully.
