DNT stands for Den Norske Turistforening, the Norwegian Trekking Association, and it is one of the main organizations behind Norway’s hiking routes, mountain cabins, and outdoor culture.
DNT’s network includes more than 600 cabins around the country, from remote mountain shelters to more comfortable staffed lodges.
Cabin types
Staffed lodges are easiest for beginners and usually serve breakfast and dinner in season. Self-service cabins usually include bunks, blankets or duvets, kitchen gear, fuel, firewood, and a pantry where you can buy food. No-service cabins are simpler and usually require you to bring all your own food.
Access
DNT members can borrow the standard DNT key, which opens most self-service and no-service cabins. The deposit is NOK 100 and is refunded when the key is returned.
Beginner advice
Start with a short cabin trip rather than a long crossing. Check the cabin type, booking method, opening dates, and what you need to bring before you go.
