About This Hike
Aksla rises directly above central Ålesund, and the Fjellstua viewpoint is the city’s classic short climb. Start in Byparken and follow 418 stone steps uphill, using the frequent benches and rest areas as needed. Near the top, Byrampen provides an intermediate viewing balcony before the final steps to Fjellstua and its panorama over the Art Nouveau centre, islands, sea and Sunnmøre Alps. The staircase is short but continuously steep; allow more than the fastest published walking time if you want breaks or photographs, and expect the descent to be harder on knees when the stone is wet. Aksla is also a wider recreation area: paths continue towards Dammene and Rundskue, while alternative approaches reach the plateau from Vannspringdalen, Volsdalen and Fagerlia. Parts of the wider trail network can be used by wheelchairs and bicycles, but the 418-step route itself cannot. Ålesund municipality states that visitors may not drive to Fjellstua, so use city-centre parking or public transport and begin on foot.
Highlights
- ✓ 418 stone steps rising from Byparken, with the Byrampen viewing balcony en route
- ✓ Panorama over Alesund's Art Nouveau townscape, the islands and the Sunnmore Alps
- ✓ Cafe and terrace (Fjellstua) at the top
- ✓ A wider Aksla trail network with routes toward Dammene, Rundskue and Vannspringdalen
Getting There
Use public city-centre parking and walk to Byparken for the 418-step start; there are limited spaces near Aksla stadium for longer routes from Volsdalen.
Before You Go
For the classic visit, start on foot at Byparken and count the 418 steps as the outing—not as a level stroll to a viewpoint. The shorter climb itself can take about 15 minutes, but allow time for the Byrampen and Fjellstua views. If stairs are not suitable, there are alternative approaches to the wider Aksla area; check the current local access information rather than treating the steps as the only way up. Avoid Borgernes veg when rockfall warnings or closures apply.

⚠️ Safety Notes
- The stone steps are steep and can be slippery when wet, frosty or icy, so use the handrail and take care, especially on the way down.
- It is a sustained 418-step climb, so pace yourself and use the benches; choose another activity if the climb is beyond your mobility or fitness level.
- The viewpoint terraces and the Byrampen balcony sit above steep drops, so keep back from the edges and supervise children closely.
- Use only open, signed paths. Ålesund municipality identifies Aksla as an area with landslide and rockfall risk, and specifically warns of rockfall along Borgernes veg.
