About This Hike
Fløyen is Bergen’s most accessible city mountain, with a viewpoint 320 metres above the harbour and several genuinely easy walks from the upper station. Fløibanen reaches the top from the city centre in about six minutes; walking up is a different, steadily uphill outing on streets and forest paths. For a short family extension, follow the signed gravel road behind the playground for 400 metres to Skomakerdiket, normally 10–15 minutes each way. The approach to the lake and the circuit around it are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, although weather and winter ice still affect the surface. A fuller but still easy option is the marked 3.5 km Fløyvarden loop, estimated at about 1.5 hours, which climbs to a cairn at 393 metres before returning through forest. These are defined walks, unlike an improvised continuation deeper into Bergen’s mountain network. Choose the outing before you arrive, check the live Fløibanen timetable if you depend on it for the descent, and carry a map and extra layer on longer routes because fog, rain and wind can arrive quickly above the city.

Before You Go
Decide whether Fløyen is a six-minute funicular visit, a short forest walk around Skomakerdiket, or the start of a longer mountain day—those are three different plans. A documented easy option from the upper station is the 3.5 km Fløyvarden loop (about 1.5 hours); longer routes need their own plan. Check the live Fløibanen timetable before relying on it for the return, particularly around maintenance dates or late in the day. The summit area is easy to enjoy with children, but a walk onward into the city-mountain network still needs a map, warm layers and a clear turnaround time.

⚠️ Safety Notes
- You can ride the Fløibanen funicular back down if you would rather not walk.
- Bergen is very rainy, so bring waterproofs and expect paths to be slippery when wet.
- The climb from the city is a steady uphill with some steep sections, so wear shoes with good grip.
- Paths near the top can be icy in winter.
- Check funicular opening times if you plan to ride up or down.
