About This Hike

Nevelfjell (1,089 m) is an open highland summit between Nordseter and Pellestova, north of Lillehammer. This guide uses the straightforward Slåsæterfjellet–Nevelfjell circuit: start from the parking area between Ilsetra and Pellestova, follow the T-marked trail over Slåsæterfjellet (1,064 m) and continue to the summit, then return toward Pellestova to complete a roughly 6.5-kilometre loop. Allow about two hours for the circuit. A sighting disc on the summit helps identify Jotunheimen and Rondane on clear days, and Nevelhytta is an emergency shelter restored in 2021. The terrain is gentle by Norwegian mountain standards, but it is exposed above the trees; carry windproof layers, navigation and a headlamp if there is any chance of a late finish. Other approaches from Nordseter, Pellestova and Nevelåsen are longer or use different roads, so do not combine their measurements with this route.

Highlights

  • ✓ Jotunheimen views
  • ✓ Perfect for sunsets
  • ✓ Beginner-friendly
  • ✓ Open mountain scenery

Getting There

Use the parking area between Ilsetra and Pellestova, reached via the toll road from Øyer or via Nordseter. Check current road access and payment before travel.

Before You Go

Use the signed Slåsæterfjellet–Nevelfjell circuit as the defined easy route: it starts at the parking area between Ilsetra and Pellestova and is about 6.5 km with 186 m ascent. Nevelfjell has several approaches, so a track from Nordseter or Nevelåsen is not automatically the same outing. The mountain is mild in profile but fully exposed; the emergency shelter is for unexpected conditions, not a substitute for windproof layers or a turn-around decision.

Information checked: September 2026, against current UT.no and DNT Lillehammer route information

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Above the tree line the summit is exposed and the weather can change quickly, so carry wind and waterproof layers even on a short walk.
  • If you hike for sunset, bring a headlamp and plan the descent, as the upper trail is easy to lose in fading light or fog.
  • A Red Cross emergency shelter at the summit offers refuge in sudden bad weather, but should not replace proper clothing and an early turnaround.
