About This Hike

Ramnstoknuten is a 562-metre summit in Frafjordheiene, Gjesdal, reached on a demanding 13.3 km blue-marked highland route. For that version, start at the large car park by Giljastølen ski centre, follow the road towards Råsavatnet for roughly 600 metres and turn onto the blue-marked trail. The day then crosses undulating open terrain rather than making one simple climb, so the modest summit height understates the effort. Gjesdal municipality classifies the route as strenuous and says it can be walked through the year only when there is not too much snow. In clear weather, the summit area looks towards Høgsfjorden, Frafjord and Frafjordhatten; in cloud or wind, the same exposed terrain demands reliable navigation and an early turn-around decision. A different route starts at Dirdal marina and climbs via Skaret. It is the shortest approach but also the steepest, with different timing and ascent figures. Choose one route before leaving, download its map and do not combine statistics from the two approaches when deciding whether the hike fits your group.

Highlights

  • ✓ Summit outlook over the meeting point of Høgsfjorden and Frafjorden
  • ✓ A blue-marked mountain route in the Frafjordheiene landscape
  • ✓ A clear-weather panorama towards Høgsfjorden, Frafjord and Frafjordhatten
  • ✓ A steeper alternative starting at Dirdal marina for hikers who deliberately choose that route

Getting There

Giljastølen ski centre at Gilja — large car park on the right of the road, with an overflow area further on. The route then follows the toll road towards Råsavatnet for about 600 m before the blue-marked trail branches right. Fees not published.

Municipality: Gjesdal, Rogaland

Before You Go

Ramnstoknuten has more than one approach. The 13.3 km municipal route is the blue-marked highland hike; the route from Dirdal marina via Skaret is shorter but considerably steeper. Choose one route before leaving, use its own map and timing, and check snow and visibility on the day.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • The 13.3 km route is rated strenuous and spends much of the day in exposed, undulating terrain; bring enough food, water and layers for a full day
  • Follow blue markings but carry an offline map or GPS track: a long highland route is not the place to improvise a shortcut
  • The hike can be walked through much of the year only when snow conditions allow; turn back if snow, wind or visibility make navigation uncertain
  • Do not substitute distance or timing from the steep Dirdal/Skaret route for the longer highland route
