About This Hike
Saksa rises steeply above Urke on the Hjørundfjord. The established route begins at the car park by Urkeelva and is 3.5 kilometres one way, gaining 950 metres to the south summit at 1,001 metres. Morotur estimates four hours and five minutes for the ascent, so allow a full day for the return rather than judging it by the short distance. The route climbs through forest and Leknesdalen before zigzagging up Sherpa-built stone steps in the scree. The south summit gives exceptional views down Hjørundfjorden toward Øye and out toward Ålesund. The highest northern summit is a separate, more serious continuation: the trail between the south and north summits crosses airy ground and is not recommended for people with a fear of heights. Go only in settled conditions with solid footwear, sufficient water and enough time for the long descent.
Highlights
- ✓ Dramatic Hjørundfjord views
- ✓ Sunnmøre Alps panorama
- ✓ Steep but rewarding climb
- ✓ Less crowded than popular peaks
Getting There
Use the hiking car park by Urkeelva in Urke: turn left just after the village shop and continue about 100 metres.
Before You Go
The stated 7 km return and 950 m ascent describe the route from Urkeelva car park to Saksa's south summit. Morotur's four-hour-five-minute estimate is for the ascent, not a quick round trip. The continuation to the higher north summit passes through airy terrain, so treat it as a separate decision rather than the default end of the hike.

⚠️ Safety Notes
- The steep path can be wet, muddy and slippery; wear boots with good grip and take extra care on the descent.
- Weather changes fast and Saksa is often shrouded in fog, so map, compass and navigation skills are essential.
- The narrow notch between the south and middle summits involves moderate scrambling; turn at the south summit unless you are comfortable with more demanding terrain.
