About This Hike

Djevelporten, the Devil's Gate, is a large boulder wedged in a rocky cleft high above Svolvær in Vågan. Start at the municipal Grushaugen car park, where toilets and a waste-return point serve the Djeveltrappa trailhead. The climb follows the Sherpa-built stone staircase completed in 2022 and is graded moderate as far as the upper mountain area, provided you are comfortable with a long sequence of steep steps. The character changes at Djevelporten itself: the cleft is exposed, there is no fall protection around the boulder, and stepping onto it for a photograph adds avoidable risk. The marked route ends here. A rough path continues beneath the ridge towards Fløya, but Vågan municipality describes that continuation as a separate demanding route for hikers with sufficient mountain experience. The south-west ridge beyond Fløya is harder again, with highly exposed terrain and no through-route back to town. For this guide, Djevelporten is the turn-around point. Return down Djeveltrappa and allow extra care on wet stone.

Highlights

  • ✓ Djeveltrappa Sherpa stone steps built into the mountainside
  • ✓ The iconic Devil's Gate boulder wedged between two rock faces
  • ✓ Panoramic views over Svolvaer, the harbour and Vestfjord
  • ✓ A clear decision point: return on the maintained stair route, or only continue to Fløya with separate route knowledge

Getting There

Use the municipal Grushaugen car park at the Djeveltrappa trailhead, reached from E10 through the Nyveien, Øvreværveien and Blåtindveien residential streets. There are toilets and a waste-return point at the car park.

Before You Go

Plan Djevelporten and Fløya as two different objectives. The maintained, marked stair route is designed to Djevelporten and returns the same way. The terrain towards Fløya is described by Vågan municipality as demanding and exposed, so make it an informed mountain-route choice—not a spur-of-the-moment extension after reaching the boulder.

Information checked: September 2026, against Vågan municipality's Djeveltrappa/Djevelporten route and trail-management information

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • The area around the wedged boulder is very exposed; climbing onto it for photos is genuinely risky and has no fall protection.
  • The marked route ends at Djevelporten. The continuation towards Fløya is a separate demanding route and should not be attempted without appropriate mountain experience.
  • Wet rock makes the descent especially demanding, so use sturdy footwear and turn back if conditions are poor.
  • Avoid the exposed upper section in high wind, low cloud, snow or ice.
  • The Sherpa stairs can suit older children, but the upper exposed sections require experience and close supervision.
