About This Hike

Dronningstien, the Queen’s Trail, is a point-to-point mountain traverse above Hardangerfjord between Kinsarvik and Lofthus. It offers wide views over the fjord, orchards and surrounding peaks. The official route is 16 kilometres with roughly 1,100 metres of total elevation difference, and the official estimate is six to nine hours. It crosses forest, high-mountain terrain and wet or boggy ground before the steep descent via Munketrappene to Lofthus. It can be walked either way, but many start at Røte near Kinsarvik. Plan the return transport before beginning: use the signed all-day parking at Røte or Vassmyrane, arrange a shuttle or taxi between trail ends, or place a second car at the finish. Check the current local parking notice before travelling, as availability around Lofthus can change.

Highlights

  • ✓ Panoramic Hardangerfjord views
  • ✓ Historic royal hiking trail
  • ✓ Waterfalls and mountain scenery
  • ✓ Traditional fruit farming views

Getting There

Use the signed all-day parking at Røte or Vassmyrane near Kinsarvik (parking fee applies), or the old ferry parking by the fjord opposite Esso. The route is one-way, so use the Hardanger shuttle, taxi or a second car for the return. Check the current parking notice before travelling: Lofthus-centre availability is subject to temporary works and restrictions.

Before You Go

Dronningstien is a one-way traverse, so transport is as important as fitness. Starting at Røte/Kinsarvik is the usual logistics-friendly choice: park in a designated all-day area, arrange the Shuttlebus Hardanger or taxi to/from Lofthus, and only then set off. Lofthus-centre parking is short-stay, so it is not a reliable all-day finish-point plan.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • This is a demanding 16 km, one-way mountain hike. Plan return transport before setting out and allow the official 6–9 hours.
  • The route crosses forest, high-mountain terrain and wet or boggy ground before the steep descent via Munketrappene. Wear sturdy footwear and take extra care on the descent.
  • The normal walking season is July to mid-September. Outside that period, do not rely on the normal-season route information; check current local conditions and transport before travelling.
  • The shuttle’s morning transport to Røte must be booked by 20:00 the previous evening; check the operator’s current timetable before making a one-way plan.
