About This Hike

Nigardsbreen is an outlet glacier of the Jostedalsbreen ice cap in Jostedalen, Luster. From Breheimsenteret, the automated-toll Brevegen road runs about 3 kilometres to the car park at Nigardsbrevatnet. From there, follow the currently signposted route to the designated viewpoint; walking the full approach normally takes a little over an hour each way. The lakeside path crosses polished, uneven rock and is more demanding than its low elevation suggests. A seasonal boat shortens that approach and runs continuously rather than to a timetable, normally from late May or June into September depending on lake conditions. Seats cannot be reserved, and guided glacier groups may fill some departures, so allow waiting time. The viewpoint is the end of the independent visitor route, not the start of an informal glacier walk. Icefall, meltwater and rockfall hazards change as the glacier retreats, and the safe viewpoint can move. Follow every closure and sign; step onto the glacier only with suitable expertise or a qualified guide.

Highlights

  • ✓ A close, safe view of the blue tongue of Nigardsbreen, an arm of Jostedalsbreen, mainland Europe's largest glacier
  • ✓ A seasonal boat across Nigardsbrevatnet that makes the approach easier
  • ✓ Glacier-polished bedrock slabs and a genuinely alpine atmosphere at only around 300 m above sea level
  • ✓ Breheimsenteret national-park visitor centre with exhibitions at the head of the valley

Getting There

Drive 3 km from Breheimsenteret on the automated-toll Brevegen road to the designated car park at Nigardsbrevatnet. The road is normally open from late April through October and is closed in winter; overnight parking is not allowed.

Before You Go

Nigardsbreen is not a fixed-distance attraction: the safe viewpoint can move as the glacier changes, and boat use changes the effort and timing. Decide whether you are walking the full lakeside approach or waiting for the seasonal boat, then follow the current marked route. A glacier walk is a separate guided or expert activity, not an extension of the viewpoint visit.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Follow the signed route and respect the current location of the designated viewpoint. The glacier is constantly changing, and large ice blocks can break off without warning.
  • Do not remain in areas exposed to falling ice, sudden meltwater surges or rockfall. Rockfall risk increases in rain or stormy weather.
  • If you intend to leave the signposted route or go onto the glacier, use a qualified guide unless you have suitable glacier knowledge and experience.
  • Rock slopes can be slippery when wet; wear suitable footwear and take extra care in wet conditions.
  • Boat departures run continuously during the season rather than to a fixed timetable, and departures may be reserved for guided groups. Do not rely on a specific departure without allowing time.
