About This Hike
Prestvannet is a small lake and protected landscape area near the centre of Tromsøya. A 1.7-kilometre path circles the water on mostly level gravel and asphalt surfaces, making this one of Tromsø's simplest self-guided walks. Gaps in the birch woodland frame Tromsdalstinden, Fjellheisen and mountains across the surrounding islands, while the wetland supports rich birdlife in summer. Keep to the paths, give nesting birds space and never feed wildlife. The loop is also used in winter, but easy summer walking does not mean reliably bare ground: packed snow and ice may require traction, and Arctic darkness calls for a light. Prestvannet connects with Tromsøya's wider recreation and ski-trail network, so pay attention at junctions if you only want the short lake circuit. Never assume that lake ice is safe. Follow local signs and current municipal advice before stepping onto frozen water or skating.
Highlights
- ✓ A short 1.7 km loop close to Tromsø city centre
- ✓ Views towards Tromsdalstinden and the mountains around Tromsø
- ✓ Protected wetland and summer birdlife
- ✓ Gravel and asphalt paths with very little climbing
Getting There
The simplest low-impact option is local bus 28 or 40 from central Tromsø. The lake can also be reached on foot in about 30 minutes, though the approach from the centre is uphill.
Municipality: Tromsø, Troms
Local buses 28 and 40 serve the Prestvannet area; check Svipper for current stops and times.
Before You Go
Use this as a flexible, low-commitment city walk. Take the bus if you want to avoid the uphill approach from the centre, remain on the lake circuit at trail junctions, and adjust footwear and lighting to the winter surface rather than assuming the route stays snow-free.

⚠️ Safety Notes
- Stay on the paths and avoid disturbing the protected birdlife, especially during the breeding season.
- Never assume the lake ice is safe. Follow current local signs and advice before walking or skating on it.
- Winter paths can be icy even though the route is flat; carry traction and a light when conditions require them.
- The wider trail and ski network has several junctions. Keep the lake beside you if you intend to walk only the short loop.
