About This Hike

Telegrafbukta is a beach, park and coastal recreation area at the southern end of Tromsøya, about three kilometres from the city centre. Visit Tromsø describes a 4–5 kilometre coastal walk south from the centre and around the island's southern shore, with sea views, beaches and mountain horizons throughout. For a shorter outing, take the bus directly to Telegrafbukta and follow the surfaced path around Sydspissen before returning the same way. The area has benches, fire pits, play spaces, seasonal toilets and sections of accessible path, but conditions and the exact turnaround you choose determine whether the full outing is step-free. The exposed shoreline can be windy, wet or icy, and winter darkness arrives early. Remain on the path when rocks are slippery, keep well back from waves in rough weather and use established fire sites only when local rules and fire conditions allow. Telegrafbukta is also an event venue, so check for festivals or temporary access changes before relying on a quiet visit or available parking.

Highlights

  • ✓ Sandy beach and mountain views at the edge of Tromsø city
  • ✓ Coastal path around Sydspissen with benches and fire pits
  • ✓ Bus access and a flexible choice of short or longer walks
  • ✓ A possible northern-lights viewpoint on clear, dark evenings

Getting There

Free parking is available at Telegrafbukta but fills quickly on busy days; paid overflow parking is available by Kulturskolen. Buses 33 and 34 stop beside the park.

Municipality: Tromsø, Troms

Local buses 33 and 34 stop at Telegrafbukta. Check Svipper for current times and service changes.

Before You Go

Choose your version before setting out: walk the full 4–5 km coast from the centre, or use buses 33/34 for a shorter Sydspissen circuit. Check the weather, event calendar and winter surface, and do not assume free parking or seasonal toilets will be available.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • The coast is exposed to wind, spray and rapidly changing weather. Stay on the path and back from the water in rough conditions.
  • Winter ice can make surfaced sections slippery; carry traction and a light when conditions require them.
  • Parts of the area are accessible, but surface conditions and your chosen turnaround affect the complete route.
  • Use established fire sites only and follow current local fire restrictions.
  • Check for festivals or events that may change access, parking and the character of the area.
