About This Hike
Romsdalseggen is a demanding point-to-point ridge walk above Åndalsnes, with long views over the Romsdalen valley, Rauma river, Trollveggen and surrounding peaks. The standard summer plan starts with the seasonal Romsdalseggen bus from Norsk Tindesenter to Venjedalssetra. From there, follow the red T marks through Hestheia and climb onto the ridge. Published figures vary slightly, but plan for about 10 kilometres, 960–970 metres of ascent and five to eight hours. Hestheia is the last stated place to refill water before the exposed ridge. Around Halsaskaret, narrow terrain, chains and light scrambling make the route unsuitable for inexperienced hikers or anyone strongly uncomfortable with heights. Cloud and wind can make navigation and balance much harder even when Åndalsnes is calm. At Nesaksla, the normal walking finish descends the steep Romsdalstrappa past Rampestreken to town. Romsdalsgondolen is an optional alternative only while operating, so verify the timetable before boarding the morning bus. Carry a route map, proper boots, food, layers and enough water; official guidance advises against attempting the ridge outside its main summer season.
Highlights
- ✓ Continuous panoramic views
- ✓ Views of Trollveggen wall
- ✓ Sharp alpine peaks
- ✓ Well-marked summer trail
Getting There
Use the seasonal Romsdalseggen bus from Åndalsnes to Venjedalssetra (recommended); it avoids collecting a car after the hike. If driving, use designated long-term parking in Åndalsnes or the limited parking at Vengedalen, and check current arrangements before setting out.
Before You Go
Romsdalseggen is a one-way ridge day, not a loop from the trailhead. The seasonal bus from Åndalsnes to Venjedalssetra avoids a second-car problem; at the far end you still need to choose the long Romsdalstrappa descent or the gondola only if it is operating. Make both transport decisions before the bus leaves town, and base the go/no-go call on the ridge forecast rather than the weather in Åndalsnes.

⚠️ Safety Notes
- Exposed ridge sections make this unsuitable for anyone with a fear of heights.
- Halsaskaret is narrow, steep and chain-secured; be prepared for light scrambling on rough rock.
- It is a long, demanding point-to-point route, so assess the whole group before setting out.
- Avoid dense fog or low cloud, strong wind with rain or cold, and thunderstorms; conditions on the ridge can differ greatly from Åndalsnes.
- Carry enough water: Hestheia is the last stated opportunity to fill a bottle before the ridge.
- Allow a full day and good fitness; Romsdalstrappa is a long, steep descent, while the gondola is an optional descent only when operating.
- Use proper hiking boots, windproof and waterproof layers, food, a fully charged phone and a checked mountain forecast.
- The official advice is not to hike the route outside its main season.
