About This Hike

Ulriken, at 643 metres, is the highest of Bergen's seven mountains. The main walking ascent is Oppstemten, a demanding, well-signed route of about 2 kilometres from the Ulriksbanen lower station. Its central feature is a 750-metre Sherpa-built staircase with roughly 1,400 steps and 290 metres of height gain; benches and viewpoints divide the sustained climb. Allow one to one and a half hours up and wear clothing for exposed summit weather even when Bergen is mild below. The Ulriksbanen cable car is a separate, universally accessible summit option and can support a one-way walking plan, but only after checking its live operating hours. The lower station has no general visitor car park beyond two accessible spaces. Public transport is recommended; drivers should use a legitimate alternative such as Haukeland hospital's garage or parking at Montana and follow current restrictions. Above the station, signed short walks continue across rocky ground. The Vidden crossing to Fløyen is not an extension to improvise late in the day, but a separate long mountain route requiring a map, suitable weather and a return plan.

Getting There

There is no general visitor parking at the lower cable-car station beyond two accessible spaces. Use public transport, the Ulriken Express when operating, Haukeland hospital parking garage, or legitimate parking at Montana; follow current local signs.

Before You Go

Choose one of three distinct plans: climb Oppstemten from the lower station, take the cable car for a summit visit, or cross Vidden to Fløyen. The first is a sustained stair ascent, the second depends on the live cable-car timetable, and the third is a separate mountain day. Do not start Oppstemten assuming the cable car will automatically solve a late or weather-affected descent—check operating hours first, and carry layers even on a mild day in Bergen.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • The upper sections are steep and rocky with loose stones and become slippery in rain, so take care especially on the descent.
  • Weather near the summit can change quickly, bringing fog and cold that reduce visibility, so check the forecast and carry warm, windproof layers.
  • In winter the path and stone steps are often snow-covered or icy, making the ascent hazardous without proper footwear and experience.
  • The cable car timetable varies by season; check the live operating hours before using it as a descent plan.
