About This Hike

Rampestreken is a 20-metre steel viewing platform 537 metres above Åndalsnes and the Romsdalsfjord. The walking route begins below Nebba and follows signs for Romsdalstrappa and Nesaksla. A mixture of natural trail, roots, rock and stone steps built by Nepali Sherpas gains about 515 metres in only 1.75 kilometres; allow roughly one and a half hours for the ascent and two to three hours return. Handrails help on selected sections, but wet roots and rock remain slippery. The platform is narrow, exposed and busy in summer, so queues are normal and no photograph is worth stepping outside the protected area. From Rampestreken, continuing uphill for roughly 15 minutes reaches Nesaksla, Eggen Restaurant and the upper Romsdalsgondolen station. That creates two legitimate one-way options: hike up and ride down, or take the gondola up and walk about 15 minutes downhill to the platform before returning. Check gondola hours before depending on it. Winter access is condition-dependent; ice may require spikes or crampons, while deep snow can make both Rampestreken and Nesaksla unreachable.

Highlights

  • ✓ Cantilevered steel platform jutting out roughly 537 m above the Romsdalsfjord
  • ✓ The Romsdalstrappa: stone steps built by Nepalese Sherpas
  • ✓ Wide views over Andalsnes, the fjord and the Romsdalen peaks
  • ✓ Option to continue up to the Nesaksla summit and gondola

Getting There

Parking at the Romsdalstrappa trailhead below Nebba or at Rauma Cultural House, about a five-minute walk from the start.

Before You Go

The walk from Åndalsnes is a steep ascent that normally takes about 1.5 hours to Rampestreken. If the gondola is operating, an alternative is to ride up to Nesaksla and walk roughly 15 minutes downhill to the platform; walkers can also continue about 15 minutes from Rampestreken to the mountain station for a downhill gondola. Check operating hours before choosing a one-way return plan. The platform should not be confused with the universally accessible ramp at the mountain station, which does not lead to Rampestreken.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • The route has exposed roots and rock that can be slippery. Wear sturdy footwear and use the handrails provided on relevant sections.
  • The 3.5 km return route gains about 515 metres. Take breaks as needed and turn back if the trail conditions exceed your experience.
  • In winter, use suitable traction such as spikes or crampons when conditions are icy. Deep snow can prevent access to the viewpoint or Nesaksla.
  • Rampestreken is very popular in summer and queues can form at the platform; allow time and follow any local instructions.
